Shenandoah

Shenandoah – Traditional Song (performed by Tom Roush)

Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you,
Away, you rolling river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you
Away, I’m bound away, cross the wide Missouri.

Oh, Shenandoah, I love your daughter,
Away, you rolling river
For her I cross your rolling water
Away, I’m bound away, cross the wide Missouri.

Tis seven years since last I’ve seen you,
And hear your rolling river
Tis seven years since last I’ve seen you,
Away, I’m bound away, cross the wide Missouri.

Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you,
And hear your rolling river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you
We’re bound away, across the wide Missouri.

There are countless versions of this traditional ballad. There are many instrumental versions, too.
Of the vocal versions I’ve found, this one is my favorite. Simple, traditional, soulful.
