It’s darkest before the dawn. We are living through a period of unprecendented change. We can cower or create. We can resist or we can invent. We can despair or design new worlds to inhabit.
We Lose Sight of the Marvels of This Era
Software advisors (“bots”) will interact with us in the way that’s most natural: through conversation. We will converse with artificial intelligence in order to increase our proficiency, to know more, learn faster, decide and collaborate with others. Already we are interacting constantly with information technology but it’s not yet like “talking with a trusted advisor”.
Each of us is in a state of cognitive overload. On one hand we’re addicted to the ‘rush’ of novelty and surprise. Yet simultaneously we’re overwhelmed by it all. Journalism is designed to agitate more than inform. Advertising is designed to distort our motivations, to make us less satisfied, to make us crave things. Politics is designed to polarize us; it is by definition the pursuit of power using propaganda.
Journalism, advertising and politics delivered via an addictive media is polluting the collective consciousness. Our social coherence is falling apart. Social capital or trust is being destroyed and thus our innate ability as humans to cooperate is being decimated. We are agitated as individuals and incompetent as a society.
Can anything be done?
A new media consisting of “software advisors” can both let us cope with information overload and coach and guide us to do what’s right for ourselves and for society.
